Visit the old hub of the trade in Venice: Business and Faith in Rialto

Business and Faith in Rialto tour will uncover the importance that Rialto played as Venice financial and commercial centre. The Rialto Market today is still a fascinating place,  rich both in history and charm. Walking through greengrocers, vendors of cheese, florist and the large fish market, you will discover also evidences of the past activities.

The small church of San Giacomo di Rialto, with its clock-face on the facade, was the place of worship for merchants who prayed the Lord for honest, but profitable business. According to tradition, it seems like San Giacomo is the oldest church in the city, yet the first document mentioning it dates from 1152

Quite close stands the small, yet astonishing church of San Giovanni Elemosinario, where an outstanding painting by Titian is preserved. In addition, the  Guild of Poulterers  decorated their altrar with a interesting painting. The members of the guild are portrayed worshipping the Virgin Mary with all their chickens.

We will then stop by one of the typical wine bar to taste delicious “cicchetti” (tapas) with  local wine. Finally we’ll cross the Grand Canal with the Traghetto (gondola-ferry), and walk through narrow alleys towards the Square of St Mark.

DURATION: 2 hours

THE PRICE OF BUSINESS AND FAITH IN RIALTO INCLUDES:

  • the service of a qualified tour guide
  • admissions to the church of San Giovanni Elemosinario
  • the tasting of 3 cicchetti and a glass of wine (or other drinks)
