When to visit Venice? Depend…

One of the questions most frequently asked of us, Venice guides, is when to visit the city; at what time of year is it best to enjoy its beauties. Fortunately, there is no single answer, because the magic of Venice and its thousand cultural and other riches can be enjoyed all year round. In fact, it can be said that Venice likes to change clothes very often throughout the year. So if we wanted to give an answer to the initial question, i.e. when to visit Venice, we could say that the best time of year to visit Venice depends first of all on how we want to see it ‘dressed’. Whether with a glittering ceremonial dress or with a much more casual look. If we are more interested in the Venice of big events or if instead we would like to discover more the everyday Venice, the more ‘intimate’ one.

Following this reasoning we can give you some advice. When it comes to big events in Venice, there are two months to highlight on the calendar: February and September. In February, Venice is coloured by its historic carnival, amidst a thousand cultural and social events. In September, on the other hand, the appointment is with the Film Festival, which takes place in the Lido setting and brings dozens of international stars every year, often ‘found’ visiting the city’s calli. The first Sunday in September is also the day on which the city’s famous “Regata Storica” takes place. An event that sees boats of different sizes and colours (including the famous ‘Caorline’) compete on the Grand Canal, in the name of tradition and Venetian-style rowing.

There is also another Venice, no less fascinating, but certainly more ‘intimate’. A city that lives out its days marked by the rhythms of daily life and by its enduring bond with the water. To discover this ‘hidden’ Venice, it is necessary to deviate from the traditional tourist flows and opt for months such as October and November. Stroll through the calli and feel ‘Venetian’ for a few hours, because Venice, out of the clamour, knows how to be even more welcoming. And then, a detail that will certainly not escape photography lovers, Venice in the evening has a unique magic and the sunsets that late autumn can offer at these latitudes are something that takes one’s breath away.
