How can you contribute to Safeguarding Venice?
In response to the serious damage caused by the November 1966 floods several international committees devoted to Safeguarding Venice. UNESCO supervised the restauration and preservation of the priceless, and irreplaceable cultural heritage of Venice. Important international committees, as well as common people, contributed to restore a large number of monuments, buildings and paintings. Yet there is still much to do.
Safeguarding Venice tour begins with the visit of the church of Santa Maria Formosa, one of the first churches founded in Venice. The present church, dating from the Renaissance time, contains some paintings which were restored in the past years.
After walking through the off-the-beaten-paths we’ll get to Campo dei Santi Giovanni e Paolo, dominated by impressive buildings. We’ll see the impressive early Renaissance Scuola Grande di San Marco, once a lay fraternity of the Venetian Republic. The visit to the Scuola will outline the social and political importance guilds had in the past. We will see how rich was the decoration of the Scuola.
Next to the Scuola stands the majestic Basilica of Saints John and Paul, the most imposing Gothic buildings in Venice. Here you will have to opportunity to admire the great works of art, including paintings by Giovanni Bellini and Veronese.
