Description
Venice Southern Lagoon tour: ideal if you are looking for something different to do in Venice.
Venice Southern Lagoon is a very relaxing day trip to explore the lesser-known Southern area of the Venetian Lagoon. A private luxury boat will take you to visit the small quite village of Malamocco on the Lido island, This was one of the first places to be inhabited in the lagoon. Originally called Metamauco, it became the seat of the Lagoon government in the 8th C. We’ll walk through the small old streets to reach the sea side, and enjoy a view of the Adriatic Sea.
We’ll then cross the port of mouth, where the waters of the Lagoon encounter those of the sea. The second stop will be at the island of Pellestrina, where fishing is still the main activity. Here we will see the Murazzi built in response to increased flooding in the 18th century. They are basically the sea walls, made of white Istrian stone blocks. This is the last major project to preserve the Lagoon undertaken at the time of the Venetian Republic.
After a stop for a drink Venice Southern Lagoon tour will continue to reach Chioggia, the Lagoon southernmost town. Here the sails of the fishing boats are painted with brightly colored pictures and symbols. Founded as a port at the time of the Roman Empire, Chioggia is the second-largest settlement in the Lagoon after Venice.
After a slow walk to explore the island and to see one of the most characteristic and important fish markets in Italy, we will have an unforgettable lunch at a typical “chioggiotto” restaurant to enjoy the typical local cuisine. You will then have some time at leisure to walk around and shop, before riding back to Venice relaxing and enjoying the calmness of the Lagoon.
